A dry basement can take carpet and becomes a warm, quiet room. A damp one cannot, because carpet on a wet slab can smell and grow mold. We check the slab first. If it is dry we lay carpet over a moisture barrier and a pad made for concrete. If not, we will recommend vinyl plank instead.

The pad under the carpet decides how soft it feels, how long it lasts and how quiet the house is. In bedrooms we use a softer pad, on stairs a firm one, and in a basement a pad that suits concrete. One house often takes all three.
